CapsuleHistory
The Ridge Road Fire District is located In Upstate New York near the shore of Lake Ontario... Along the midwestern border of the City of Rochester and along the southern portion of the Town of Greece. Formed and Incorporated in 1922, the Ridge Road Fire District and the Greece Ridge Fire Department launched a joint relationship that has evolved into one of the busiest and most progressive fire districts in Monroe County.

Cutting through the middle of the district is I-390 and NYS Route 104. The intersection of these two major roads help support Greece and it's largest concentration of residential, commercial and industrial development. In addition to the busy 104 corridor, development continues to flourish near and along the Historic Erie Canal, which winds through the southern portion of our district.

Our district is occupied by large corporations like;
    •    Eastman Kodak Company
    •    IBM Global Data Services
    •    Johnson & Johnson
    •    Unity Health Systems - Parkridge Hospital Campus
    •    Wilmorite's Mall at Greece Ridge Center with over 300 Stores
    •    Gannett's Democrat & Chronicle Newspaper Press Facility
    •    ITT Space Systems
    •    others
The Town of Greece has a population of nearly 100,000 and one of the largest school systems in the State of New York. With this concentration of population and development, the demands for emergency services have steadily increased. Our force responds to over 5,000 calls for service a year in a 15 square mile area.

Over the last four decades, RRFD & GRFD have gone through a gradual transformation of staffing. The fire district hired it's first career employee in 1922, and in 1959, the first career firefighters were sworn to serve. The district's demographics also went through a transformation to become the business district for the township. With increased traffic and intersection lights along most of our main roadways, response by volunteers in personal vehicles became increasingly difficult. These barriers significantly affected response times and their effectiveness to readily provide service. Additionally, state and national training mandates placed a necessary burden on the volunteer forces. These factors ultimately eroded the membership to alltime lows. Around 2004, RRFD became fully staffed with career personnel, entering the Fully Paid Department category.  Today, RRFD employs 55 career fire supression personnel, 2 non-fire supression persons, 1 civilian (full-time) and 4 civilians (part-time). The GRFD holds 5 active members and are considered protectives.

Similar to a School Board or a town council, the Fire District is manages by publicly elected officials. These officials make up the Board of Fire Commissioners (Historically, the term "Board" was a large table, typically made of hardwood, that members sat around to conduct business). One Board member is elected by the public in early December. There are five seats on the Board and each official has a five year term. The Board meets once or twice a month and oversees and directs the Administration as needed. Together, the Administration and Duty Staff work seamlessly with the Duty Firefighters, Volunteer Firefighters and Public Safety Dispatchers to ensure that the goals and objectives of the district's mission are met.

The Fire District enjoys a friendly and cooperative relationship with the Firefighter's Union. The members of the Ridge Road Professional Fire Fighters Association, Inc - Local 3794, are all active members of the International Fire Fighters Association (IAFF).

The special interest and dedication of all the employees at the Ridge Road Fire District have consistently raised the bar locally and statewide.
