FIRE / EMS SAFETY
HEALTH & SURVIVAL WEEK

In support of the 2009 Fire/EMS, Safety and Survival Week sponsored by the IAFC and IAFF, RRFD has directed all department personnel to recognize this potentially life-saving initiative by viewing the popular fire service video TO HELL AND BACK. After watching the video, all will complete a 20 question post test.

The movie is available at www.peoplesburnfoundation.org

RRFD + 911 = 6 Months of Satisfaction
06.15.09... In January 2009, the Monroe County & City of Rochester Emergency Communications Department (ECD) began dispatching our Fire, Rescue & EMS Services.  Nearing our "6 Month Mark", we're happy to report that the transition has been both successful and surprising. The joint venture so far has proved to be a GOOD FIT.

Perhaps the most significant issue during the transition was related to Automatic Fire Alarms. For many many years RRFD has been the receiving point for several schools, corporations and hotels.  No longer a central alarm receiving point for these alarms, subscribers were directed to reconfigure their alarm paths to proprietary central alarm receivers.  Alarm companies then relay jobs to ECD/911.  Just a mere hurdles, a learning curve for all parties, and a few tweaks of a hand full of local alarm communicators and the false activations seem to have subsided.

The folks at ECD have been wonderful to work with and we anticipate a smooth 2nd half. To all employees of RRFD & ECD, keep up the GREAT WORK!

05.14.09... Congratulations to Firefighters; Brian Passino, Michael Flanagan, Kelly Seigfred and Michael Sauer for their successful completion and graduation from the NYS Basic Firefighters Training Program held at the NYS Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY. These Firefighters were recently hired with funding from a SAFER Grant award.

Their official swearing-in date as RRFD Firefighters will be in June. (Date TBA)

PUBLIC ALERT!

It has come to our attention that a group, calling themselves the Firefighters Support Foundation is soliciting donation from residents of Monroe County. The organization is NOT authorized by the Fire Department and has been referred to the New York State Attorney General’s Office. If you received a phone call or a letter from this organization please disregard it.

If you have any questions regarding any Group Soliciting Donations for Firefighters, please feel call me at 453-1201. Thank you for continued support.

Chief Harold "Bud" Phillips

safetyALERT
The New York Department of State’s Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) urges all New Yorkers to make sure there are working smoke detectors in their residence, as well as to clean and test  them regularly. The first few days of 2009 have proven tragic to the citizens of our state given the loss of nine lives in residential structure fires lacking operating smoke detectors.
